Central Coast Families Suffer 61% Increase in Unemployment Last Year
Wednesday, 11 November 2009

New Federal Government figures show the number of jobs lost on the Central Coast rose by 61.3 per cent last year as the broken NSW Labor Government failed to manage the State’s economy, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

The ‘Small Area Labor Markets’ report released by the Federal Government this month revealed an additional 4,108 people became unemployed on the Central Coast between March 2008 and 2009.

“This new report shows an additional 4,108 Central Coast residents lost their jobs over the 12 months to March 2009.

“That’s an increase of 61.3 per cent, which was one of the most significant rises in the State,” Mr Baird said.

“These annual figures reflect how families and businesses on the Central Coast are suffering while the Rees Government focuses on delivering spin instead of solutions.

“NSW is only just limping out of the recession following 14 years of Labor’s broken promises, failure and incompetence.

“We are getting tired of hearing the Treasurer talk about his ‘green shoots’ as everyone knows it is his Government that scorched the earth to begin with.

“The Treasurer must adopt the Liberals/Nationals plan to cut payroll tax by 15 per cent for this financial year, with a further 5 per cent cut for areas of high unemployment.

“If our payroll tax plan was in place, many of these jobs could have been saved,” Mr Baird said.
