Enough is Enough... Public Transport Not an Avenue for Budget Relief
Wednesday, 22 October 2008

“The JetCats will be considered in the context of the Mini Budget” – Minister for Transport, Mr David Campbell, on 2UE radio, Steve Price program (22-10-08)

In an ominous sign for Manly residents, it looks like Nathan Rees and David Campbell are offering the JetCat service as a potential means of freeing up funds in the Mini Budget, said Manly MP Mike Baird.

“If this is the logic then heaven help the rest of the Mini-Budget process,” Mr Baird said. “Taking the JetCat service from Manly is like taking the Tube out of London.”

“It now looks like Nathan Rees is going to protect his Labor MPs in marginal seats after announcing that he plans to save the Parramatta Rivercat service.

“The only conclusion we can take from this is that the entire Mini-Budget process is putting politics above good policy, let alone true fiscal responsibility.

“Sydney Ferries’ revenue was up 14% while its expenses were up 46% over the past five years, so whatever costings the Government is using against us are primarily the result of their mismanagement. These costings need to be made public.

“Manly commuters should not have to pay for the Government’s mismanagement. If the issue with the JetCats is reliability, then why was the maintenance budget slashed by 27 percent over the last two years?

“Every day there are long queues to get on the JetCat in peak hours – the only complaint with the JetCat is that there aren’t enough services to satisfy demand and services are cancelled because of maintenance problems.

“First we have the Government attacking bus services on the Peninsula, they’re yet to provide a long-term solution for Spit congestion, and now they’re planning to axe the fast ferry service.

“When are they going to get it? Public transport should not be sacrificed for quick financial gain and particularly not to cover up years of sloppy management.”

Jet Cats
Good on you Mike! Save our Jet cats!
Fix the Mis-management. Raise prices if you have to. (Surely in the real world that is how you would get rid of the long queues and reduce the losses?) But don't let the government reduce our services.

jetcats
The residents of Manly will lose the jetcats (and probably ferries) because they have excluded all other peninsula residents from parking anywhere in Manly for the day and therefore reducing fellow patrons on the jetcats and ferries. In order to create private parking on public roads for locals and then being allowed to get extra parking permits, the streets are again full anyway with parked cars, with visitors to Manly basically giving up on the Manly retail and Ferry service. Once these services are only supported by Manly residents who walk to the jetty from home, demand will obviously mean they cannot be supported. Manly will be left with night-time drinking as your main source of income. At least you can use your extra cars to drive to the city when the ferries stop.

jetcats
a casual comment on one radio program! well picked up! this is such a critical issue for Sydney. it is not that difficult. keep cars off the road whenever possible. encourage boats and trains and two wheeled transport, then buses when there are no trains. wake up labour, you have lost the plot

What's going to be left?
It seems that every month this year has heralded another ridiculous policy from the NSW Government. I'm just sick and tired of this affecting Northern Beaches commuters. every morning I take the ferry, and every morning I see the Jetcat full to capacity turning away passengers. What I can't believe is that this situation is happening to passengers that are paying a premium price for a fast, efficient service. To any reasonable business-minded person, this would be seen as throwing money out the window. How long till the next election?

Jetcats
Let's face it, we've paid the price for not being marginal. Rees is no different from Iemma, just more articulate. His exclusion of the Parramatta Rivercat from potential cuts in the minutes before making the announcement, he has demonstrated that he is not interested in good policy.

jetcats and ferries.
Having just viewed the planned restructured bus services for the Northern Beaches, again we are regarded as silvertails who don't need effective Public Transport.
The Walker enquiry was to have been implemented by now but no we have a State Government under it's previous leader that would sell off our electricity at a bargain basement price.(Thank god that didn't go off)
The Jetcats are an essential service for Manly commuters as are the ferries.
The new Transport Minister and Premier are not impressive people and no doubt are trying to Band Aid their ailing Treasury Budget.

Labor Party Strategy
I think Labor strategy for the two years is starting to emerge. Jettison anything that costs money in non-labor seats - that includes jetcats, buses, hospitals, schools, anything! Secure the Labor heartland at all costs. So much for governing for all citizens on NSW. After the labor wipeout last weekend, they must be terrified! Good, so's the rest of the state!
