Expenses Out of Control - Almost $500m Paid to Temps
Tuesday, 01 June 2010

The Keneally Labor Government is abandoning frontline workers by hiring administrative temporary staff to the tune of almost half-a-billion dollars per year, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

“This is just another example of the Keneally Labor Government having completely lost control of its expenses,” Mr Baird said.

“I think everyone in NSW would be amazed to know the Keneally Labor Government has spent $200 million in six months on administrative temps,” he said.

“This is despite assurances from the Premier last year that a recruitment freeze is in place for all non-frontline jobs.

“The average cost of these temps is $101 per hour – despite the majority performing administrative roles.

“There is no doubt temps are more expensive in the long term and it seems as if no-one in the Keneally Labor Government is being held to account for the amount each department is spending.”

Documents obtained through FOI revealed the Keneally Labor Government spent $201 million on non-frontline temporary staff from 1 July 2009 to 31 December 2009, including:

  • $33 million by the Department of Education on 657 temps

  •  $11.8 million by NSW Health on 346 temps

  • $24.7 million by the RTA on 383 temps

  • $1.9 million by the Department of Premier and Cabinet on 86 temps

“Instead of hiring more teachers, nurses and bus drivers to improve services, the Keneally Labor Government is boosting its head-office.

“This suggests the Budget will be all about spending the windfall revenue they are receiving through increased stamp duty and GST, rather than building for the future.

“Taxpayers are sick of Labor focusing on spin over substance, it is holding the State back.

“The NSW Liberals & Nationals will make every Minister responsible for financial discipline across the whole of Government,” Mr Baird said.
