Fairfield Families Suffer 81% Increase in Unemployment Last Year
Wednesday, 11 November 2009

New Federal Government figures show the number of jobs lost in Fairfield rose by 81 per cent last year as the broken NSW Labor Government failed to manage the State’s economy, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

The ‘Small Area Labor Markets’ reportreleased by the Federal Government this month revealed an additional 4,807 people became unemployed in Fairfield East and Fairfield West between March 2008 and 2009.

“This new report shows an additional 4,807 people in Fairfield lost their jobs over the 12 months to March 2009, that’s an increase of 81.2 per cent – one of the highest rises in the State,” Mr Baird said.

“I know many Fairfield families are doing it tough and the high rate of payroll tax in NSW makes it hard for businesses to keep workers in their jobs, let alone create new jobs.

“These annual figures reflect how families and businesses in Fairfield are suffering while the incompetent Rees Government focuses on delivering spin instead of solutions.

“In these uncertain times, businesses need positive and practical plans from Government so they can prevent job losses and boost conditions for local families.

“That’s why the Liberals/Nationals has proposed to cut payroll tax by 15 per cent over this financial year, with an additional 5 per cent off in areas of high unemployment.

“The Treasurer Eric Roozendaal likes to talk about the ‘green shoots’ he sees appearing but people know it is his Government that scorched the earth to begin with.

“Local employers would be able to deliver more jobs to families in Fairfield if the Treasurer adopted the Liberals/Nationals payroll tax plan.”
