Higher Taxes But Poorer Services
Thursday, 01 July 2010

Families and pensioners across NSW will be today hit with an onslaught of higher taxes, fees and charges, as the public continues to bear the brunt of the Keneally Labor Government’s incompetence, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

“Taxpayers will be unable to escape the Keneally Government’s tax offensive launched today,” Mr Baird said.

“From higher electricity, water and gas prices to higher ambulance call-out fees, higher taxi charges, higher tolls and a new land and transfer charge – there is no avoiding the tax and cost-of-living onslaught from the Keneally Labor Government,” he said.

“While Labor’s Ministers may change, the one constant is that taxes are going up and services are going down.

“Whether it be waiting lists for hospitals, crowded trains or road congestion, services are deteriorating on a daily basis.”

From today the following fees and charges apply to NSW residents:

  • New land and transfer charge for properties valued over $500,000
  • New $500 million motor tax - $30 per motorist
  • Increased gas charges of up to 13%
  • Increased energy charges of up to 13%
  • Increased water charges
  • Increased ambulance call-out fee and per kilometre charge
  • Increased taxi charges of up to 3% (as of 12 July 2010)
  • Increased tolls for the Lane Cove Tunnel ($2.77 to $2.80); Military Road E-Ramp ($1.39 to $1.40); Eastern Distributor ($5 to $5.50); Westlink M7 (33.85 cents per km to 34.15 cents per km)
  • New CTP Greenslips charge
  • Increased Parking Space Levy from $2000 to $2,400 per year for Sydney, North Sydney and Milsons Point; and $710 to $720 per year for St Leonards, Chatswood, Parramatta and Bondi Junction.

“Even the payroll tax cut announced in the Budget is treading water, as NSW continues to have the highest rate at 5.5% – far higher than Victoria and Queensland.

“In contrast the NSW Liberals & Nationals have announced a raft of positive and practical plans that both reduce the tax burden and make NSW more competitive, including abolishing Ms Keneally’s unfair new property tax,” Mr Baird said.
