Liverpool Families Suffer 96.5% Increase in Unemployment Last Year
Wednesday, 11 November 2009

New Federal Government figures show the number of jobs lost in Liverpool doubled last year as the broken NSW Labor Government failed to manage the State’s economy, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

The ‘Small Area Labor Markets’ report released by the Federal Government this month revealed an additional 3,859 Liverpool residents lost their jobs between March 2008 and 2009.

“This new report shows the number of unemployed people in Liverpool doubled over the 12 months to March 2009 – the most significant increase in the State,” Mr Baird said.

“It is clear many families in Liverpool are doing it tough and the high rate of payroll tax in NSW makes it hard for businesses to keep workers in their jobs, let alone create new jobs.

“These annual figures reflect how local families and businesses are suffering while the Rees Government focuses on delivering spin instead of solutions.

“In these uncertain times, businesses need positive and practical plans from Government so they can prevent job losses and boost conditions for local families.

“That’s why the Liberals/Nationals has proposed to cut payroll tax by 15 per cent over this financial year, with an additional 5 per cent off in areas of high unemployment, such as Liverpool.

“The Treasurer Eric Roozendaal likes to talk about the ‘green shoots’ he sees appearing but everyone knows it is his Government that scorched the earth to begin with.

“Local employers would be able to deliver more jobs to families in Liverpool if the Treasurer adopted the Liberals/Nationals payroll tax plan.”
