Nominal Growth Welcomed, But NSW Still Lags
Tuesday, 01 September 2009

While NSW has experienced a small growth in State Final Demand over the past quarter, it is still well behind the rest of the country, said Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird today.

“These figures show New South Wales is the second-slowest growing State. Instead of limping out of recession, we should be leading the pack,” Mr Baird said.

Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today* show NSW experienced a 0.5 percent growth in State Final Demand from the March to June quarters.

“The nominal growth is welcomed, but New South Wales is still lagging behind Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania,” Mr Baird said.

“This is no time to gloat about a nominal improvement – positive, practical plans are required.

“The Rees Labor Government may be happy to just live out the downturn, however the people of this State are tired of accepting second best.

“Strategies like the Liberal/Nationals’ plan to cut payroll tax by up to 20 percent must be implemented.

“A one-off 15 percent cut to payroll tax across the board, with an additional 5 percent cut in regions of high unemployment, would allow businesses to keep people in their jobs.

“Since Nathan Rees became Premier, more than 47,000 additional people have lost their jobs – that’s more than 140 every day.

“For the economy to experience real growth, every infrastructure project that’s announced must be delivered. The Liberal/Nationals’ plan to create Infrastructure NSW would guarantee that.

“The Rees Government’s priorities are all wrong. If it doesn’t take material action to restore our economy, NSW will continue to lag behind.”
