NSW Businesses Want to Grow, But Held Back by Skills Shortage

The State Labor Government is failing to support business to grow and create jobs with a new survey showing NSW businesses want to hire but can’t find skilled workers, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

A survey by Randstad has found NSW businesses are concerned growing skills shortages in the State threatens to hamper growth and expansion plans

“We have the double whammy in NSW – the highest unemployment rate in the nation, and a declining number of skilled workers,” Mr Baird said.

“The NSW economy will continue to drag the chain unless the Keneally Labor Government starts to provide the support businesses need to grow.

“This annual survey of 850 NSW companies found that hiring intentions have risen from last year.

“However businesses in NSW are not creating jobs as they are unable to find skilled workers.

“For too long the State Labor Government has slammed businesses with high taxes and heavy regulation.

“Today’s survey shows the lack of skilled workers is compounding the problem, with one in five NSW businesses reporting it as their biggest challenge.

“This is an increase from nine percent of businesses who were concerned about the skills shortage last year.

“We urge the State Labor Government to implement the NSW Liberals & Nationals Jobs Action Plan and get serious about addressing the skills shortage to kick start the economy.

“This Plan targets the creation of 100,000 new jobs by giving a payroll tax rebate, which is paid in two parts to encourage long-term sustainable jobs.

“NSW will not shake its title of the ‘Unemployment State’, while the Keneally Labor Government fails to provide any incentives to grow,” Mr Baird said.
