NSW Consumers Have Lowest Confidence In Economy
Tuesday, 13 October 2009

Residents in NSW have the worst perception of the current state of the economy according to the latest Sensis Consumer Report, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

“While almost all other states and territories perceive the economy to be in a growth phase, consumers in NSW think it is slowing down*,” Mr Baird said.

“Despite the State Treasurer celebrating his so-called ‘green shoots’, the reality is NSW is only limping out of recession,” he said.

The Sensis Consumer Report September 2009 released today found NSW shares the lowest perception of the current state of the economy with Tasmania at net negative 3 percent.

“Consumers and businesses in NSW lack confidence that the Rees Labor Government can turn this state around.”

The new report also showed while consumer confidence increased throughout the country, NSW continues to rate as one of the worst with confidence levels at 50 percent**.

“This report shows half of NSW consumers are worried about their financial prospects for the year ahead – the second lowest result in the country.

“NSW residents are worried as they do not feel secure in their job, they are worried about the rising cost of living and they are worried as they do not have confidence in the Rees Labor Government.

“We again urge the Treasurer to adopt the NSW Liberals & Nationals‘ plans to restore the state’s economy.

“Our payroll tax plan would make NSW more competitive with other states and enable businesses to keep people in their jobs.

“NSW is ready for change and change for the better is possible. It is time to bring back pride and hope to people in NSW,” Mr Baird said.
