NSW Growth Over Past Decade is Dead Last
Wednesday, 02 June 2010

Kristina Keneally and Eric Roozendaal are living in a parallel universe if they think NSW is leading the economic recovery, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

State Final Demand figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today show NSW had the slowest growth of all mainland states over the past decade*.

“While the Premier and Treasurer would like to think differently, the truth is NSW has had the slowest growth of all mainland states over the past 15 years,” Mr Baird said.

“The 0.6 per cent growth we have seen over the past quarter is nothing to celebrate when you look at the decade-long trend for NSW.

“While Queensland grew 103 per cent since 1995 and Victoria 86 per cent, NSW dragged the chain at 72 per cent.

“After 15 years of incompetent Labor Government in this state, NSW has lost its competitive edge and it will take more than spin to get it back.

“Of course you will see growth affected by the billions thrown around by the Rudd Government that future generations will have to pay back.

“The concern is that as interest rates have shifted off emergency levels and the stimulus spend draws to an end, the NSW economy will remain very fragile.

“Without direct stimulus measures such as our Jobs Action Plan, NSW will not experience sustained growth.

“We urge Ms Keneally and Mr Roozendaal to implement the NSW Liberals & Nationals positive and practical plans to rebuild the economy.

“Our Jobs Action Plan will target the creation of 100,000 new jobs by injecting activity into the NSW economy, growing businesses and strengthening the state’s bottom line.

“The Keneally Labor Government needs to implement material plans to restore the NSW economy before it can claim any credit for nominal growth,” Mr Baird said.
