NSW is Slugged with High Taxes for Little Return
Tuesday, 27 April 2010

NSW taxpayers will not be surprised to know they pay the second highest taxes in the nation, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics Taxation Revenue report released today*, NSW taxpayers pay  $2,919 per capita in taxes to the State Government each year - higher than every other state or territory apart from Western Australia.

“Looking at our infrastructure needs and stretched services, you would think NSW had the lowest taxes in the nation but sadly, it’s the opposite,” Mr Baird said.

“NSW taxpayers pay more taxes to the State Government than people in Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, the ACT, Northern Territory and Tasmania.

“NSW residents are hit with a double whammy – our taxes are through the roof and our investment in infrastructure and services is rock bottom.

“The State Labor Government demands a high price for the privilege of living in NSW yet delivers little in return.

“The NSW Liberals & Nationals are continuing to urge the State Labor Government to make our state taxes more competitive.

“Through our Jobs Action Plan we have shown our commitment to cut payroll tax to give businesses an incentive to hire people.

“By providing a payroll tax rebate to businesses that create the first 100,000 jobs under an NSW Liberals & Nationals Government, it would help kick-start the NSW economy.

“We will not be able to stem the loss of NSW residents interstate, nor will we be able to attract investment and jobs to NSW while our taxes are sky high.

“We urge the Treasurer to adopt the NSW Liberals & Nationals plans to return NSW to number one,” Mr Baird said.
