NSW Jobless Figure Rises - NSW Once Again the Unemployment State
Thursday, 08 April 2010

While the national unemployment rate has remained steady, the NSW rate has risen to 5.5 per cent and is again the worst in the country, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

“Today’s unemployment figures are a reminder that under this State Labor Government NSW is going backwards,” Mr Baird said.

“Once again NSW has the highest unemployment in the country at 5.5 per cent - rising while the national rate has remained steady at 5.3 per cent[1].

“After 15 years of Labor, NSW is the Unemployment State.

“Kristina Keneally is just more of the same failure and incompetence we’ve come to expect from Labor.

“It is important not to take these statistics on a one-month basis, the reality is the unemployment rate in NSW has been above the national average for 54 of the past 55 months.

“Businesses across the State are telling us they are lacking the confidence to invest and employ in NSW due to uncompetitive taxes and high regulation.

“That is why we have released our Jobs Action Plan to target the creation of 100,000 jobs for NSW.

“Under this Plan a payroll tax rebate of $4,000 would be provided to each full-time employee for the first 100,000 new eligible jobs created in NSW under a NSW Liberals & Nationals Government.

“By paying the rebate in two equal parts, on the first and second anniversary of the hire of a new full-time employee, this would help establish long-term and sustainable jobs.

“The NSW Liberals & Nationals are providing the platform for change to make NSW number 1 again,” Mr Baird said.
