NSW experienced the sharpest increase in unemployment in the country from September to October and once again has the highest jobless rate, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today. Labor Force figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today show the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in NSW rose to 6.1 per cent in October, compared with the national average of 5.8 per cent. “For almost the entire period of the last four years NSW has had the highest unemployment rate in the country,” Mr Baird said. “Today’s statistics are further confirmation of that trend and show NSW is yet again lagging the whole country,” he said. “Treasurer Eric Roozendaal likes to talk about the ‘green shoots’ he sees appearing, but everyone knows it is his Labor Government that scorched the earth to begin with.”
ABS 6202.0 – Labour Force – October 2009. “Since Nathan Rees became Premier, an additional 100 workers in NSW have lost their jobs each day. “The part-time employment rate continues to soar – a further indication that people are hanging on to their jobs by reducing hours. “We again urge the Rees Government to adopt the NSW Liberals & Nationals practical plan to support jobs in this State by reducing payroll tax by 15 per cent for this financial year,” Mr Baird said.
