While it is a shame NSW lost the most residents through interstate migration last year, it is not surprising after 15 years of State Labor, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today. According to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics today, NSW recorded the largest negative net interstate migration with a loss of 16,700 persons for the 12 months to 30 September 2009[1]. “People in NSW are voting with their feet – they are fed up with the way the State has been managed and they are searching for a better quality of life,” Mr Baird said. “There were 16,700 NSW residents that packed their bags and moved interstate last year, which was the highest number of any other state or territory. “Meanwhile 16,000 people crossed the border into Queensland and 3,400 set up life in Western Australia. “There’s no doubt the fact NSW has had one of the highest unemployment rates for several years would be a contributing factor. “The State Labor Government has continued to slug families and businesses with high taxes, while failing to invest in infrastructure and improved services. “It is clear that for 16,700 NSW residents last year, that took its toll. “Earlier this month Boeing decided it could not continue to operate in NSW and is moving to Victoria – taking with it 350 jobs. “And last week another Western Sydney factory, Dana Automotive Systems, closed its doors, leaving around 115 workers without a job. “Business confidence is at rock bottom after the axing of the doomed Rozelle Metro project and house prices are still sky high. "The NSW Liberals & Nationals are committed to making NSW number one again and that includes making NSW the first place to do business. "I say to every other State: you have had it too easy for too long and prepare for competition that you have never seen should we be given the chance,” Mr Baird said.
