Roozendaal to Face Censure Motion as Lotteries Saga Continues
Wednesday, 12 May 2010

The NSW Liberals & Nationals will today move a censure motion against Treasurer Eric Roozendaal amid concerns he misled Parliament over the sale of NSW Lotteries, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

“In Parliament yesterday the Treasurer refused to explain why he told Parliament there were no complaints about the Lotteries transaction when there was not only a complaint but a very serious one,” Mr Baird said.

“Not only did Eric Roozendaal make light of the accusation yesterday, he then refused to deny documents were shredded in relation to the Lotteries sale process.

“Parliament is to be respected and the Treasurer needs to be held to account for clearly misleading Parliament on such an important transaction.

“Whether we’re talking about failing to ensure a fair and transparent process or short-changing taxpayers tens of millions of dollars, the Treasurer should be accountable.

“The complaint letter that Treasury received from an unsuccessful bidder on 17 March clearly articulates significant concerns in relation to the Lotteries transaction.

“Given the contents of this letter, how did the Treasurer satisfy himself that there was a level-playing field among bidders and that sale proceeds were maximised?

“While Eric Roozendaal has stated the sale process was fair and transparent, these are hollow words given his actions in Parliament yesterday.

“The Treasurer’s failings in relation to the Lotteries transaction may have cost the State tens of millions of dollars, given reports the unclaimed prize revenue was sold for well below market estimates.

“We are today censuring the Treasurer for deliberately misleading the people of NSW and his incompetence in executing this major transaction.”
