Scorched NSW Economy Continues to Languish Under State Labor
Monday, 26 July 2010

Economic growth in NSW remains the lowest in the nation with the latest CommSec report revealing NSW still languishes last on economic performance overall, Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

“NSW cannot seem to shake its title of the worst performing economy in the country,” Mr Baird said.

“Despite all the spin about green shoots, the reality is the NSW economy is scorched and NSW Labor is to blame.

“Today’s CommSec State of the States report shows that while Western Australia is the best performing economy in Australia, NSW continues to perform the worst on current activity compared with decade averages.

“On the key indicators of economic growth, dwelling starts, construction work, unemployment and retail trade, NSW is ranked last or second-last in the country.

“The housing crisis shows no signs of clearing with the report finding dwelling starts in NSW are 11 per cent below decade averages.

“There is no doubt that NSW needs a shot in the arm and we are hopeful next March the Liberals & Nationals will get an opportunity to deliver this.

“Our plans to establish Restart NSW will drive economic growth by providing the funds that are needed to build the infrastructure that’s missing.

“Restart NSW will be funded by windfall tax revenues that exceed Budget forecasts, additional borrowings within the AAA credit rating and proceeds from the long-term lease of the desalination plant.

“Our goal through Restart NSW is to lift economic growth to above the national average.

“The aim of our Jobs Action Plan is to provide a kickstart to job creation that will drive the jobless rate down to below the national average.

“Today’s report is more evidence that the trend of underperformance in NSW is entrenched under this State Labor Government.”
