Victoria Takes the Lead on Payroll Tax Cuts
Wednesday, 05 May 2010

The Victorian Government’s State Budget announcement to cut payroll tax highlights the Keneally Labor Government’s failure to do enough to keep NSW competitive, NSW Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell and Shadow Treasurer Mike Baird said today.

The Victorian payroll tax rate will be 4.9% from July 1. In NSW the rate will be 5.5% on 1 January 2011.

“After 15 years of incompetent Labor Government in NSW, our state has lost its competitive edge,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“This is why the NSW Liberals & Nationals have a Jobs Action Plan to target the creation of 100,000 new jobs for NSW,” he said.

“The NSW Liberals & Nationals want NSW to be the jobs capital of Australia.

“Our Jobs Action Plan will target the creation of 100,000 new jobs in communities across NSW, injecting activity into local economies, growing businesses and ultimately strengthening the State Government’s balance sheet.”

Mr Baird said the Keneally Labor Government was failing NSW families and businesses.

“The NSW Liberals & Nationals Jobs Action Plan will work by:

  • Providing a payroll tax rebate of $4,000 per full time employee for the first 100,000 new eligible jobs created in NSW;

·         Paying the rebate in two equal parts, on the first and second anniversary of the hire of a new full time employee. This will encourage long-term, sustainable jobs.

“The NSW Liberal & Nationals Jobs Action Plan will promote job creation by giving immediate incentives to the businesses who employ around two million workers in NSW, or two-thirds of the State’s workforce.

“The Keneally Labor Government represents more of the same, the NSW Liberals & Nationals represent change.

“The NSW Liberals & Nationals have a strong team and strong ideas to make NSW number one again,” Mr Baird said.
